More than Paper
What are you really buying when you purchase insurance? The obvious answer is an insurance policy. However, it should be a whole lot more than just a piece of paper.
Unfortunately many people don’t put a lot of thought into their insurance. They just want what they want and at the lowest possible price. Many of them go online or call an 800 number. Some of them get over obsessive and shop every insurance agency in town. A few will actually sit down with an Independent Insurance Agent and have a discussion about what they actually need.
The job of the Independent Insurance Agent is to protect their client’s assets. Having regular conversations with your independent agent allows the two of you to work as a team in assessing your risks and the types of insurance coverage you need. The point of having regular communication between you is because things change over time. Your teenager may be about to get her driver’s license and you need to know if you should add her to your auto insurance or have her buy her own policy. Maybe you are thinking about buying a new house and want to know what the homeowner’s insurance would cost. The point is that life brings change and your insurance needs will change with it.
Your insurance agent should be someone with whom you can develop a relationship. It should be someone you can trust and that you know is looking out for you. Your agent should be someone who will work pro-actively for your benefit, whether it be to add coverage that you are lacking or to help you take advantage of discounts that will help save you money.
So, when you buy insurance make sure you are buying more than just a piece of paper.
