Receiving medical payments after a hit-and-run with North Carolina car insurance
Being a victim of a car accident can be distressing enough, but even more so if it is hit-and-run accident. It can be particularly traumatic if you suffer a serious injury as a result of the crash. How will you receive coverage for medical expenses if you don’t know who the offending driver is?
The good news is that as long as you have North Carolina car insurance, you should be covered for medical payments. Since 2009, it has been mandatory for uninsured and underinsured motorists’ coverage to be a part of every car insurance policy. That means if a driver hits you and either doesn’t have insurance or flees the scene, you will still be covered for losses.
Uninsured motorist coverage essentially pays for expenses that the offending driver’s insurance company ought to pay but doesn’t, either because the driver is not covered by an insurance company or the driver is unknown. Any driver that leaves the scene of an accident he or she caused is committing a crime under North Carolina law.
You have some freedom to select a limit on the uninsured motorist component of your North Carolina car insurance policy. Of course, the higher limit you set, the more likely you are to be fully covered if you suffer a serious injury or your car is seriously damaged.
